Lengthy, special letter handwritten by the holy Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Assad of Serdheli to the holy Gaon the Yeri’ot Shlomo of Makova, about the rabbinic position of his son the Gaon Rabbi Aharon Shmuel Assad. Av, 1859.

The letter begins with superlatives: ‘אל שר התורה הארי שבחבורה אספקלריא המאירה ה"ה כבוד הוד ידי"נ הרב הגאון הגדול ועצום המפורס’ נזר תפארת הדור והדרו בנש"ק וצדיק נשגב מו"ה שלמה זלמן אולמאן האב"ד מאק"א יע"א, בעמה"ח ספר יריעות שלמה וס’ במח’ יחייהו ה’ חיי נעימים וכחול ירבה ימיו על כל ימי הארץ א"ס’


The Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Assad asks the Yeri’ot Shlomo to get into the thick of things of the appointment of his son Rabbi Aharon Shmuel as Rav of Niaraton since residents of the town were causing difficulties and insisting on forming a committee to hold up his nomination. He also asks the Yeri’ot Shlomo, in addition to his efforts to promote the nomination, to pray that his son’s name comes up in the planned lottery. 

On verso of the letter, a German handwritten notation ‘האבער רביננער’ the Chief Rabbi of Makova and a rare and special wax seal of Rabbi Yehuda Assad. The seal was obviously broken when the letter was opened. 

The holy Gaon Rabbi Yehuda Assad [1796-1866] one of the greatest rabbis of Hungary and a leading Posek in the generation after the Chasam Sofer, who called him ‘a great scholar, Ish Tzaddik Tamim’. The Rav of Serdehil and Rosh Yeshiva of hundreds of students. His disciples were important rabbis of Hungary. Maran the Divrei Chaim called him ‘Mofes Hador’.

The renowned Gaon Rabbi Aharon Shmuel Assad [1830-1905] the son of the Mahari Assad, succeeded his father as the Rav of Serdhali for more than thirty years. A disciple of Moron the Ketav Sofer, Rabbi Shlomo Kluger, Rabbi Avraham Schag and the Yeri’ot Shlomo of Makova. Corresponded on Halacha with all Gedolei HaDor. Published his father’s book. Eventually, his halachic responses were edited and printed in many books.

[1] large leaf. Folded. Fold lines. Perforations affecting words and letters that were professionally restored. Some of the words are subsequently unreadable, yet overall, the document is well-understood. The condition after the restoration is good-very good.
